Amazonas - Maryba STEAM

Maryba Steam: Empowering a group of Italian students in the Brazilian Amazon discovering the environment through immersive 360°  video experiences.

This is one of the most unique and complex projects I have ever worked on, mainly because of its extraordinary setting: the breathtaking lands of the Brazilian Amazonas.

The project unfolded in Xixau, a small rural community along the Jauperí River, nestled between the Brazilian states of Roraima and Amazonas. Here, the locals welcome visitors into their precious habitat, gently guiding them to discover an environment that, though breathtaking, often appears silent and unchanging to our Western eyes.

Thanks to their generosity, and to Emanuela Evangelista, a biologist who relocated there a few years ago, this seemingly harsh landscape revealed itself as teeming with life and sound.

For even a brief moment, I was able to experience this richness, to feel part of a living flow that is ever more fragile in our Anthropocene era.

This special project called Maryba Steam was born in tanks to a Public Advice about experimentation of innovative didactic practices using digital technologies, and was developed in Summer 2023,  I collaborated with a team to create both 360° videos and “classic” videos, capturing the exponential learning journey of a group of high school students. They had the rare opportunity to travel to the Amazon, discover its land and culture, and learn how to work with multimedia tools.

I worked alongside them, teaching the fundamentals of video production and immersive storytelling, while guiding them through hands-on experiences with real audiovisual materials and production techniques.

Here’s the 360° video, I have made of course best viewed on an headset!
